Lucid Group has introduced RangeXchange, a cutting-edge vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging adapter for the Lucid Air, their flagship model. This innovation, enhanced by the Lucid charger, is a testament to Lucid's commitment to advancing electric mobility. The Lucid Air, celebrated with the 2023 World Luxury Car Award, demonstrates the brand's prowess in combining luxury with technology.
RangeXchange enables Lucid Air owners to share power with other electric vehicles (EVs), providing an additional 24 to 40 miles of range per hour. This capability stems from the Lucid Air's bi-directional Wunderbox charging technology and Lucid's unique software, both integral to every Lucid Air and synonymous with the Lucid charger's capabilities.
Utilizing the RangeXchange feature is straightforward: Lucid Air owners attach the Lucid RangeXchange charging adapter, to their charging cable, and then connect it to the receiving EV. This process, requiring the latest over-the-air (OTA) update, underscores the Lucid charger's role in enhancing the vehicle's functionality and underscores Lucid's foresight in the realm of OTA technology advancements.
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid, expressed his enthusiasm about the company's continual innovation, especially in integrating software and hardware, a principle central to the Lucid charger design. He views RangeXchange as a vital enhancement to the practicality of EVs.
The Wunderbox’s bi-directional charging technology allows energy transfer from the Lucid Air to another EV at a rate of up to 9.6 kW. The range added depends on several factors, such as the receiving vehicle's efficiency and environmental conditions, showcasing the versatility of the Lucid charger.
Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid, highlighted the Lucid charger's multifaceted nature. The Wunderbox, a core component of the Lucid charger, is more than a charging unit; it's a gateway to future capabilities like vehicle-to-home power, time-of-use optimization, and vehicle-to-grid applications. This reflects the potential of Lucid's bi-directional charging technology in enhancing customer experiences.
The RangeXchange feature, initially available to U.S. owners, necessitates the purchase of a special charging cable adapter, available exclusively from Lucid. This feature, enabled by an OTA update, cements Lucid's status as a leader in the luxury electric vehicle segment, with the Lucid charger playing a pivotal role in this advancement.
Recently, Lucid Motors teased its all-electric SUV Lucid Gravity before its full debut at the LA Auto Show on November 16, 2023, building on the success of the acclaimed Lucid Air.
