The market for electric trucks is rapidly expanding with major manufacturers such as Chevrolet, Ford, and Tesla introducing models such as the Silverado EV, F-150 Lightning, and Cybertruck. As there is a global shift towards environmentally friendly trucks, it is predicted that companies that have not yet entered the market will soon have to do so. However, manufacturers are still producing their traditional ICE pickups alongside electric models.
The newly emerged market for electric trucks has leveled the playing field for small start-up companies that focus solely on creating electric vehicles. This means that the big three in Detroit will no longer have an advantage, particularly as long as they continue to prioritize their internal combustion engine trucks and SUVs. While bigger companies have more resources to invest in innovative technologies and designs, smaller companies are now better positioned to compete. Canoo, a California-based EV start-up, aims to disrupt the market with its practical and adorable pickup truck, designed for rigorous work and which could be a competitor to the Silverado EV.
In July 2022, Canoo was awarded a contract by the United States Army to test a modified version of its electric pickup, named the Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV). The LTV features several modifications, including the use of carbon Kevlar for personnel and battery protection, stealth configurations, an upgraded 600-horsepower powertrain, a raised suspension, and 32-inch all-terrain tires for extreme conditions. Moreover, the LTV has a modular design that allows for its configuration to be tailored to specific tasks, thanks to its convertible flatbed and modular attachment system. Canoo has designed a versatile vehicle that can handle various tasks for the Army.
The Canoo electric pickup has a classic design resembling the Jeep Forward Control truck. It has a safer seating position but still offers visibility, cabin, and bed space. It can carry a weight of 1,800 pounds, tow up to 7,700 pounds and features a 4x6 bed, extendable up to 8 feet, along with a foldable craftsman bar. The truck has charging ports on all sides and is a practical choice for real working conditions.
The Canoo pickup truck has ample space with an extended cab interior and a front trunk. It has a Forward Control inspired design with extra storage behind the digital-display instrument panel and a craftsman bench. The truck bed is modular and expandable, and there are options for a roof rack and side steps. The Canoo pickup truck stands out for its modular truck bed which can be configured as per requirement with wall chocks and space dividers. It makes it easy to organize equipment and perfect for off-road camping trips. This unique feature sets it apart from other electric trucks.
Although the Canoo pickup's manufacturer has not provided specific performance data, Canoo asserts that the twin-motor, all-wheel-drive model will be capable of generating up to 500 horsepower. Since the pickup and van share the same platform, it's probable that the rear-wheel-drive version will use the same 300-horsepower electric motor as the van. Despite being less powerful than its rivals such as the F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck, the Canoo pickup can still handle any necessary tasks.
The Canoo Pickup is equipped with numerous impressive functional features and is priced competitively compared to other electric trucks. Its price is estimated to range from $35,000 to $50,000, excluding incentives. However, the cost will increase for the dual-motor model and if additional options are selected.
