Volvo’s EX90 Electric SUV Launch Update & Exciting Features

Volvo's much-awaited flagship 2024 Volvo EX90 electric SUV, touted as "the safest vehicle it has ever produced," is facing a delay of "five or six months" in its production. Unveiled last November, the fully electric seven-seater is equipped with advanced safety features, including 16 ultrasonic sensors, eight cameras, five radars, and a long-range lidar, providing a real-time, 360-degree view of its surroundings.

The standard inclusion of Luminar's lidar in the EX90 enables the SUV to sense the road ahead even in low-light conditions, enhancing safety by offering more time to react in potential dangers. The high demand for the model led Volvo to close orders after only five months of launch.

The delay in production is attributed to the "complexity of the software code" required for the innovative technology. Volvo's CEO, Jim Rowan, revealed that the company is writing much of the software themselves to ensure the lidar operates effectively in their safety stack.

Despite the setback, Volvo aims to ensure a smooth rollout of the 2024 Volvo EX90, which is the first to feature this cutting-edge technology. The inclusion of lidar has the potential to reduce severe accidents by up to 20 percent and improve overall crash avoidance by up to 9 percent, as indicated by research.

Originally planned for production later this year, the EX90 will now likely be assembled in mid-2024 at Volvo's South Carolina facility. The company is focused on getting the software right to deliver an exceptional and safe driving experience with its flagship electric SUV.

Volvo has partnered with Tesla to provide their electric cars with access to Tesla's Supercharger network. Following the lead of Ford and GM, Volvo will use the NACS port for their future EVs starting in 2025, instead of the CCS port.
