From the Road to Your Home: Volvo’s Vision for Electric Car Energy
Volvo is revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) landscape with the launch of Volvo Cars Energy Solutions. This new business unit aims to harness the untapped potential of EVs, making them integral to a smarter, more sustainable energy ecosystem.
One key technology is bi-directional charging, which allows EVs to not only draw energy but also give back excess power to the grid. Volvo's upcoming electric SUV, the EX90, will support this feature, potentially powering homes and contributing to a greener grid.
To kickstart this initiative, Volvo is collaborating with local grid companies in Gothenburg, Sweden, for a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot program. V2G enables EVs to return energy to the grid during peak demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
With plans to go fully electric by 2030, Volvo aims to tap into the surplus battery capacity of its EV fleet. Bi-directional charging, along with vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) solutions, will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable energy future.
"With the help of smart charging, you can charge your electric Volvo at the best available time from a sustainability and economy perspective," Petrofski says. "Now imagine you could use that energy later, perhaps during peak times when prices are higher and the energy mix less sustainable. The idea with building an energy ecosystem around your car and the batteries is that it allows you to save money and reduce your CO2 emissions, while energy firms benefit from reduced grid investments and a lower overall impact on the environment."
Volvo Cars Energy Solutions seeks to expand its offerings, generating new revenues from energy-related products and services, ultimately adding value to its core business, customers' lives, and the environment. This initiative marks a significant step toward a greener, more efficient energy ecosystem powered by EVs.
