In Q1, Volkswagen sold 9,758 units of the VW ID.4 model in the US, which is a 254% increase from the previous year. The sales figures of ID.4 also showed a slight improvement from Q4 sales (9,439 units). Interestingly, the sales of 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 are significantly higher than those of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which sold 5,407 units during the same period.
Volkswagen has announced that its vehicle sales in the United States rose by more than 4% year-over-year to 67,853 during the first quarter of 2023. However, this is still significantly lower than the previous year's sales of over 90,000 during Q1 2021. On the other hand, the company has achieved a new all-time high in its sales of all-electric cars.
Volkswagen's all-electric car share has reached a new high of 14.4 percent, thanks to the increased production of ID.4 at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The sales of ID.4 in the US in 2022 were 20,511, which is a 22.5 percent increase from 2021's 16,742 and accounts for 6.8 percent of the brand's total volume. More than 47,000 ID.4 cars have been delivered to customers, and the company had over 40,000 reservations at the end of 2021. Volkswagen is expected to add over 40,000 units this year alone.
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a significant car manufactured in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit. It has batteries produced in the United States by SK Innovation's SK On in Georgia. The Volkswagen ID.4 base model starts at $38,995 (+ $1,295 DST), which is a total of $40,290. However, after the $7,500 incentive is deducted, the price effectively reduces to $32,790, which is appealing to potential customers.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz and Volkswagen ID.7 will also be available in the United States in the near future. In Europe, the Volkswagen ID.4 is expected to have higher sales as it is manufactured at two facilities in Germany (Zwicaku and Emden). The model is also produced in two more plants in China (Anting and Foshan) and is manufactured at five facilities on three continents
