The ultimate electric sedan is here – the Volkswagen ID.7
Volkswagen has recently introduced its latest electric model, the ID.7, which is the brand's first global electric vehicle designed for the upper mid-size class. Boasting a powerful powertrain, spacious interior, premium technologies, and a range of up to 435 miles, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 is an ideal choice for long-distance travel, and it has opened up a new segment for the ID. family. The model is nearly five meters long, and it features an enhanced customer-focused operating concept and a high-quality appearance. The ID.7 is expected to be launched in Europe and China later this year and in North America from 2024.
Volkswagen will introduce the ID.7 in Europe, which will have two powertrain options - Pro and Pro S. The Pro model will be equipped with a 77-kilowatt-hour battery, which is expected to provide a driving range of 382 miles on the WLTP cycle. It can be charged up to 170 kW. On the other hand, the Pro S will have an 86 kWh battery, providing a range of 435 miles and can be charged up to 200 kW. The ID.7 has a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels, delivering 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. The motor has stronger magnets, more windings, and a better cooling system than previous VW models. The inverter and gearbox components have also been upgraded for better efficiency and durability.
Although details are limited, particularly regarding the U.S. models, Volkswagen has stated that the rear-wheel-drive version of the ID.7 will have a range of more than 300 miles. Additionally, there will be an all-wheel-drive option that can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. During the unveiling, Volkswagen also revealed that the ID.7 will have adaptive damping capabilities, with a range of settings from Comfort to Sport, and will automatically adjust when cornering.
When seated inside the vehicle, the cockpit is kept tidy with a small driver display known as the ID. Display, which is integrated into the dashboard and only shows the necessary information such as speed and vehicle warnings. 2024 VW ID.7 has minimized the standard instrument cluster to legally required information only. The augmented reality head-up display is where the important information such as navigation instructions, lane markings, and turn arrows are projected. This is the first time Volkswagen has implemented this technology. The speedometer and speed limit are projected approximately 11 feet ahead, while navigation instructions appear 33 feet in front of the vehicle.
The 15-inch infotainment touchscreen in the middle of the dash features a new interface with assignable buttons. The home screen and Car Control screen can be accessed without closing the current app. There are touch sliders for temperature and volume controls below the display. The new voice assistant helps control vehicle functions without removing hands from the wheel. The ergoActive seats offer 14 electronic adjustments, automatic climate mode, and temperature and moisture sensors. The seat back has ten air cushions and two larger ones in the cushion for a pressure-point massage.
The VW ID.7 features a new panoramic sunroof with "smart glass" that can be made transparent or opaque using either a control or voice assistant. The sunroof uses a layer of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal that can be arranged to block or allow light by applying voltage. The 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 also offers an optional Park Pro Assist that records the last 165 feet driven when parking, allowing subsequent parking maneuvers in the same location to be handled automatically while the driver monitors from inside or outside the car via a smartphone.
The car will first launch in China and Europe in fall of this year, followed by the North American market in 2024.
