BMW’s Next-Gen Electric i5 Set to Debut in Summer 2023
BMW is nearly finished developing the 2024 BMW i5, the first all-electric version of the new 5 Series Sedan. They're working to fine-tune the suspension and driver assistance systems to ensure a top-notch driving experience. The ride comfort and handling balance has been improved by the Vertical Dynamics Management. Plus, the Highway Assistant can now change lanes with just the driver's eyes, taking automated driving to new heights. The i5 is set to debut soon and promises to be a remarkable addition to BMW's lineup.
BMW i5 underwent a diverse testing program for over a year, including snowy and icy conditions in Arjeplog, Sweden, and extreme heat and dry conditions on city and country roads, motorways, and test tracks. Fine-tuning was done for all the driving components at BMW's proving grounds in Miramas, France, including controlling the heating and cooling circuit, heat pump function, high-voltage battery, and interior. The high-voltage battery has predictive heat management for quick and efficient charging at DC fast charging stations.
BMW 5 Series has a range of drive technology options, allowing customers to choose between internal combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully-electric drive systems. The model-specific chassis tuning and control systems ensure that all models offer the trademark BMW driving pleasure, despite the variation in vehicle weight. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive is the top model, featuring Adaptive Suspension Professional and electronically controlled dampers. This suspension is also available as an option for the BMW i5 eDrive40. It provides improved responsiveness during high-performance driving while maintaining high ride comfort, thanks to BMW Vertical Dynamics Management.
BMW's 9th generation Vertical Dynamics Management debuts in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The technology calculates ideal damping forces by factoring in input variables such as wheel speeds, steering angle, yaw rate, and acceleration. The system uses physical calculation of data based on the current driving situation instead of mathematical models. This ensures precise body control and suspension response in every driving situation.
The 2024 BMW i5 has advanced automated driving and parking features, including high-resolution cameras, radar sensors, and advanced software, which provide a safe and innovative driving experience. The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package offers Highway Assistant, allowing hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph when conditions allow. The package also includes Active Lane Change with eye activation.
The driver's alertness is monitored by an interior camera, and they can accept a lane change offered by the system. The lane change process can be initiated by looking in the side mirror and using the turn signal lever is also an option.
The production of the 8th generation BMW 5 Series Sedan will start in summer 2023 at BMW's Plant Dingolfing, and it will be available in the market from October 2023.
