Rivian Unveils Performance Dual-Motor Option for R1T Pickup
A new performance option for the 2023 R1T pickup truck was introduced by Rivian, called the Performance Dual-Motor. This new variant offers impressive acceleration and composed handling, although it is slightly less powerful than the previously released Quad-Motor version. The Dual-Motor provides 533 horsepower, which can now be increased to 665 hp with a $5,000 Performance package.
The Dual-Motor model starts at $74,800. It weighs 6914 pounds, which is 122 pounds lighter than the Quad-Motor variant. This weight reduction is mainly due to the use of a tire-inflation kit instead of a full spare tire. The Performance version comes with a 128.9-kWh battery that provides up to 352 miles of range. However, the range decreases slightly to 341 miles with the 22-inch wheels and even further to 307 miles with all-terrain tires.
The 2023 Rivian R1T Dual-Motor Performance offers different driving modes. The All-Purpose mode, which replaces the Quad-Motor's Conserve mode, disconnects the rear motor at around 20 mph to improve efficiency but reconnects it when additional power or low-speed operation is required. The Sport mode keeps the truck in all-wheel drive and unlocks the full power output, with the two electric motors generating 829 pound-feet of torque. This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, slightly slower than the Quad-Motor version.
One difference between the Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor versions is the torque distribution. The Dual-Motor model splits the torque output between the front and rear axles, while the Quad-Motor version delivers precise torque to individual wheels, enhancing off-road capability. However, for everyday driving, the difference is negligible, as the Dual-Motor still provides a balanced driving experience.
Overall, Rivian's introduction of the R1T Dual-Motor Performance provides customers with a compelling option that delivers impressive performance and a more affordable price compared to the Quad-Motor version. The company's focus on expanding its lineup and improving its EV offerings has positioned Rivian as a major player in the electric vehicle market.
As Rivian expands its existing lineup with more affordable options, they are getting ready to reveal the anticipated R2S mid-size SUV crossover starting at $40,000. the R2 series promises to deliver the same innovative features and high-performance as their flagship R1T and R1S models.
