Get Ready for Rivian’s Smaller R2 EV and New R3 Platform!

During a podcast interview, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe was asked by Marques Brownlee about Tesla's "Master Plan" and whether Rivian is following a similar strategy for their upcoming vehicles.

Scaringe began his answer by acknowledging the 2023 Rivian R1S and 2023 Rivian R1T as the main products, which was expected. He then mentioned a smaller range of products referred to as R2 and R3, which vary in size and design.

In March 2022, the CEO mentioned the R2 vehicle platform in a letter to shareholders, albeit briefly. During a podcast, Scaringe confirmed that Rivian is currently heavily invested in the development of the R2 and is in the middle of deciding where to allocate funds. The R2 will not be a quad-motor vehicle and will have fewer features than the R1 platform, but Scaringe assures that it will still embody the brand's unique personality.

Scaringe stated that the R2 and R3 models will stay true to the Rivian brand's essence, which appeals to individuals who view the outdoors as their playground. He also mentioned a Japanese brand that caters to the same audience with more economical vehicles.

The R3 could potentially be a compact 4-door EV SUV that competes with the Subaru Impreza or an all-electric Jeep Wrangler rival. This is an intriguing prospect because creating an AWD EV under $30,000 with a decent battery range is an immense challenge. However, Rivian could become the leader of the EV race if they manage to achieve this feat.

No specific timeline has been announced for when we can expect to hear more news about the R2 and R3, but it should be soon.
