Get Ready for Acura’s Type S Performance EVs After ZDX Launch!
Acura, the luxury and performance brand owned by Honda, is planning to introduce a lineup of performance-oriented, Type-S-branded all-electric vehicles in order to set itself apart from other electric cars in the market. The first of these vehicles will be the 2024 Acura ZDX mid-size SUV, which will be built on the General Motors Ultium platform.
The Acura electric car will share its platform with the all-new Honda Prologue and the Cadillac Lyriq, both of which will also offer a Type S variant. The ZDX and its Type S version will be manufactured at GM's Spring Hill Complex in Tennessee alongside the Lyriq. This move signifies a collaboration between Honda and GM to leverage shared resources and accelerate the development of electric vehicles.
Emile Korkor, the assistant vice president of Acura National Sales, emphasized the brand's commitment to delivering a driving experience that is far from "numb." Acura aims to provide a thrilling and engaging experience in their electric vehicles, in contrast to the perception that electric cars can lack excitement.
Acura's parent company, American Honda Motor Co., has set an ambitious target of selling 800,000 electric vehicles in North America by 2030. Out of this goal, 500,000 units are allocated for the Honda brand, while the remaining 300,000 units are dedicated to Acura. Although Acura's electrification strategy is still undisclosed, the company has stated that its transition to electric vehicles will be more aggressive than Honda's. Acura expects that 60 percent of its sales volume will come from electric vehicles by 2030.
Despite this electrification push, Acura recognizes that many of its loyal customers, particularly those considering purchasing an Integra Type S, may not be ready to switch to electric vehicles just yet. As a result, the company plans to continue selling internal combustion engine vehicles well into the next decade, keeping these customers engaged until they are ready to make the transition to electric.
While specific technical details of the upcoming Acura electric SUV have not been released, it is anticipated that they will closely align with the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer, which share the same Ultium platform. This suggests a high-voltage battery capacity of around 100 kWh and power outputs of up to 557 hp for the top-tier, all-wheel drive models. The estimated driving range for the ZDX falls between 250 and 320 miles, based on the performance of the Blazer. However, the exact specifications of the Acura ZDX will only be revealed when it makes its debut.
The new model will have Google integration, giving drivers easy access to apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other features on Google Play. This will offer a personalized and connected driving experience for all ZDX trims.
